The 10 Best Bookstores in Charleston (2026)
Charleston’s book and paper scene mixes neighborhood indie shops, specialty sellers, and storefronts across the peninsula and suburbs. This list ranks the ten best local bookstores and related shops based on Google review data, using a Bayesian score that balances average rating with the number of reviews so highly rated but lightly reviewed spots don’t leap ahead. Data were pulled and updated in 2026 to reflect current public feedback. Whether you’re looking for a quiet browse, a gift, or something in another language or format, these places reflect what Charlestonians and visitors have been rating most highly across the metro area.
This ranking is computed from Google reviews (our method). Listings marked Partner are paid advertising spots: they sit alongside the ranking without changing its order.

Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the right bookstore in Charleston?
Think about what you want first: general selection, new releases, used books, or specialty languages and stationery. Check hours and location for convenience, skim recent reviews for consistency, and look for events or services (like special orders) that match your needs.
What should I expect to pay at an independent bookstore?
Prices vary by item and whether a book is new, used, rare, or imported; new retail books commonly sell at standard retail prices while used copies are often cheaper. If you’re unsure, ask staff about condition, editions, or any fees for special orders before you buy.
How is this ranking built?
This list is based on public Google review data and uses a Bayesian score that weights average rating by review count so businesses with very few reviews don’t outrank well-reviewed, well-reviewed-volume shops. The data were compiled and updated in 2026 to reflect recent Google listings and feedback.
When should I call a bookstore before visiting?
Call ahead if you need to confirm hours, verify a specific title is in stock, arrange a special order, or ask about event details and seating. A quick phone call can save time and ensure the store can meet your request.
